Hillsborough, California: Renowned over its wealth, the town of Hillsborough has approximately 11,000 residents and in many ways deserves its reputation, but the "old money" in town is often very understated. Hillsborough is a town for tycoons, high-tech and Internet princes certainly, but also a town with many resident doctors, lawyers, investment bankers, and other professionals. Hillsborough trees are tall, full and abundant. The lawns are manicured and well maintained, and the landscaping is lush and imaginative and often serves to ensure privacy for its residents. Much of Hillsborough is ensconced behind gates, high walls and tall hedges. The town's three public elementary schools are among the highest scoring in the state. Several years ago, Crocker Middle School was named by the Swedish Academy of Sciences as one of the four best in the world. In its annual reports on crime, the FBI tracks cities with populations of more than 10,000. Hillsborough usually ranks as the safest city in California and one of the safest in the United States, year in and year out. Compared to other cities and towns, the commute to San Francisco real estate is relatively convenient. Highway 280 runs along the top of Hillsborough, about 21 miles to downtown San Francisco. Neighboring Burlingame has a train depot with trains and buses to San Francisco. San Francisco International Airport is also nearby.
